Was kann Lexware Office (ehemals lexoffice)?

  1. Mit boring-Buchhaltern: ab 100 EUR/Monat, menschliche Buchhaltung und geprüfter Monatsabschluss. Du übermittelst die UStVA.
  2. Mit Kanzlei + Steuerberater (Gesamtpaket): ab 335 EUR/Monat. Die boring.tax Steuerberatungsgesellschaft mbH (4 Mio. EUR Haftpflichtdeckung) übermittelt die UStVA, erstellt Jahresabschluss, KSt/GewSt-Erklärungen und E-Bilanz. Es gibt zwei Rechnungen: boring und Steuerkanzlei.
  3. Holding: 500 EUR/Jahr für Jahresabschluss, KSt/GewSt, E-Bilanz und Offenlegung, bei höchstens 50 Buchungen pro Jahr.

Beispiel: Deine GmbH macht 250.000 EUR Umsatz.

What is accounting software for a GmbH?

Accounting software for a GmbH records receipts and bank transactions, books them according to the rules of double-entry bookkeeping, and prepares the VAT return (UStVA) and reports. The difference from software for freelancers: a GmbH is required to prepare a balance sheet.

This follows from § 238 HGB and § 242 HGB. The cash-basis profit calculation (EÜR) under § 4 Abs. 3 EStG is not available to a GmbH. Software that mainly covers the EÜR is therefore not sufficient for it.

What are the strengths and limits of the two tools?

What are the strengths and limits of BuchhaltungsButler?

According to BuchhaltungsButler’s pricing page, as of 14 Oct 2026, the strengths lie in automation and in double-entry bookkeeping for companies that prepare balance sheets. According to the vendor, receipts and bank transactions can be matched, and your tax advisor gets their own access. According to the pricing page, Light already includes double-entry bookkeeping for balance-sheet companies; the “Balance sheet” report is only available from Smart.

The limits: according to the vendor’s FAQ, you remain responsible for submitting the VAT return yourself. Annual financial statements and tax returns go through your tax advisory team, which you hire and pay separately. Which filing deadlines apply to you is shown in Filing deadlines for corporations.

What are the strengths and limits of Lexware Office?

According to Lexware’s pricing page, as of 14 Oct 2026, the strengths lie in simple bookkeeping and in price: from 7.90 EUR net per month you get receipt management, and from M you get invoices and payment reminders. Monthly cancellation with no minimum term and a 30-day trial reduce the risk.

The limits: according to the pricing page, the accounting features only begin in version L. According to the help center, Lexware Office does not prepare a balance sheet. For a GmbH this matters, because it must prepare a balance sheet under § 238 HGB, and under § 5b EStG the balance sheet is transmitted electronically to the tax office (e-balance sheet). With Lexware Office, your tax advisor handles this part.

Which solution fits when?

BuchhaltungsButler fits if you prepare balance sheets, already have a tax advisor, and want to do the groundwork yourself. You book, they close. How to keep day-to-day work lean is covered in Efficient accounting: tips for SMEs.

Lexware Office fits if invoices and payment reminders are your priority and you are a freelancer using EÜR. On its own it is not enough for a GmbH: you record the ongoing bookings, and according to the help center your tax advisor handles opening and closing entries and the balance sheet.

If you want neither, a third question remains: do you want to do the bookkeeping yourself at all?

And if you don’t want to do the bookkeeping yourself?

Both programs assume that you or someone on your team does the accounting. boring.tax turns that around: the AI matches receipts and prepares bookings, and you approve. That is the “Without firm” tier at 60 EUR/month net (as of 25 Sep 2026).

If you need more help, you switch within the same account, with no data migration:

  1. With boring bookkeepers: from 100 EUR/month, human bookkeeping and a reviewed monthly close. You submit the VAT return.
  2. With firm + tax advisor (full package): from 335 EUR/month. The boring.tax Steuerberatungsgesellschaft mbH (4 million EUR liability insurance coverage) submits the VAT return and prepares annual financial statements, corporate and trade tax returns and the e-balance sheet. There are two invoices: boring and the tax firm.
  3. Holding: 500 EUR/year for annual financial statements, corporate and trade tax, e-balance sheet and publication, with at most 50 bookings per year.

Example: Your GmbH has 250,000 EUR in revenue. In the full package you pay 520 EUR/month net, so 6,240 EUR per year, at fixed, public prices. How the VAT return works in boring.tax is explained in the post Prepare and submit your VAT return in boring.tax. You can calculate all tiers in the pricing calculator.

The difference: according to their sites, BuchhaltungsButler and Lexware Office deliver software without their own tax firm. With boring.tax, your own liable tax firm is available in the same account, with 4 million EUR liability insurance coverage.

Conclusion

As of 14 Oct 2026: if you prepare balance sheets and close the books together with your own tax advisor, BuchhaltungsButler is worth a trial according to the vendor. If you work with EÜR and mainly need invoices and payment reminders, Lexware Office is worth a look. As a GmbH, with Lexware Office you additionally need your tax advisor for the balance sheet. If you want to hand off ongoing accounting entirely, compare both with a full package of AI and tax firm.
